Day 1 - Private Istanbul Old City Tour (L)

Pick up from cruise port or your hotel in the Old City/Taksim area. On this full day tour, visit the 'old city' where the Byzantine and Ottoman Empires ruled. See Hagia Sophia, one of the greatest marvels of architecture, which was constructed as a basilica in the 6thC by Emperor Justinian. Look around the inside and outside of the Blue Mosque, famous for its blue Iznik tiles and unique with 6 minarets, built in the name of Sultan Ahmet. Explore the Hippodrome, the centre of sporting (chariot races, athletics) events and political activities of the old city. Visit the Turkish and Islamic Arts Museum. Housed in a 500 year old palace (which was home to a Grand Vizier of Suleyman the Magnificent), this museum contains fabulous examples of Islamic calligraphy, tiles and rugs; as well as some great ethnographic displays on nomad cultures in Turkey.

After lunch, visit Topkapi Palace, the residence of Ottoman Sultans. See the imperial treasury, sacred Islamic relics, palace kitchens, Chinese porcelain, weapons, calligraphy and more. (Visit of the Harem is not included in the program). Finish up at the Grand Bazaar, the most attractive shopping centre and the biggest 'souk' in the world with nearly 4000 shops selling antique, jewellery, gold, carpets, leatherwear and souvenirs.

Note that the Grand Bazaar is closed on Sundays. St. Sophia is cloded on Mondays. Topkapi Palace is closed on Tuesdays.

Customers who are arriving to Istanbul cruise port will be picked up by our tour guide and take a tram to the Old City (takes about 7 minutes). This is the fastest and easiest way to get to the Old City from the cruise port.

Four of us booked the Private Istanbul Tour, on Tuesday, May 28, 2013. We were met by a driver and a most excellent guide named Hayim. Our visits included three mosques, walking down the hippodrome, a location with cisterns, the spice market, and the bazaar. Plus, we had an excellent lunch in a conveniently located restaurant. I would be remiss if I did not praise the excellent driving of our driver in crowded conditions. Highly recommend this tour. I should note that on the day of our tour, Topkapi Palace was closed. However, we lacked nothing thanks to our skilled guide.

What is the best time of year to visit Turkey?

Istanbul is a city operating all year round so any-time is good to visit. If you like sunshine, come between April to October as winter in Istanbul can be cold and rainy with the occasional snowfall.

The tourism season on the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts run from May to October but tourist sites like Ephesus are open all year round. Gulet cruises are more enjoyable when refined to the months of June to September.

Cappadocia is also a region operating all year round, although in the wintertime, snowfall is usual. The snow does provide a pretty landscape view and the hot air balloons rides will still operate as long as weather conditions are advisable.

If you travel between the months of December to March, bring an umbrella as this is when the country receives the most amount of rain.
