Reviews

G. Whitton

Just returned home after our three week trip to Turkey arranged by TTC. I thought you would like to hear my thoughts.

It was wonderful holiday and adventure, made even more enjoyable by your thorough and detailed travel arrangements. The choice of accommodation was excellent, the Sokullu Pasa staff were especially friendly and always willing to assist and offer suggestions. The guides were knowledgeable and easily understood. How excellent is TJ at Gallipoli. I doubt there is anyone who knows more - and what a sense of humour - very Australian.

We were very fortunate to have private tours with Mehmet and Gul. They made us feel very welcome, were knowledgeable, easily understood and gave Carolyn and I a valuable insight into Turkish culture and customs in addition to the places we visited.

We modified a standard group tour and there were several private transfers. All occurred on-time and without a hitch.

Overall, an excellent rating for Turkey Travel Centre. From the guaranteed 24 hr e-mail turnaround, the choice of hotels and the clock-work running of arrangements, Carolyn and I were very impressed. We did not need to use the emergency contact number during our three week trip.

We will, without hesitation, recommend Turkey Travel Centre to our friends and I know one should be contacting you shortly.

Cheers all round for Turkey Travel Centre.

Regards

Bahiyeh and Serreddin

Dear Michael

We would sincerely like to thank you very much for organising private Silk Road tour of Turkey in such a short notice, not to mention tailoring it according to our chosen destinations, budget with seeing so many historical places in such a short space of time. Our family would also like to congratulate you on your excellent work, well organised and well arranged without any delay or hardship.

We specificlly would like to let you know of the service each of the guided tour companies offered us for their friendliness and excellent information and professionalism. All six of us enjoyed every minute of the tour, be it for the excellent accomodation, tours and delicious foods as well as all organised transports. We cant get over of how everything was just perfect. Our memories of Mother Mery,s house in Ezmir, the old city of Ephesus, Pumakale, Konya, and Cappadocia and the Baloonning on the skies of Cappadocia shall stay with us for many years. Most of all we all felt at home, we found the turkish people very friendly, neat and helpful and this itself was a bonus.

This makes us want to come to turkey very soon again. Just wanted to let you know that our family is saving from now to travel again to Turkey soon in the future.

Also our tour guide for Konya was very kind to us and as soon as he found out that we have an interest in Hodja Nassreddin's monument he took us to Aghshair and showed us the city centre and Nassreddin's tomb and statues, we also exchanged many of the humor about Nassreddin and shared many laughs.

We hope this email serves justice in expressing our positive feelings and happy emotions about this trip. Also our friends who traveled with us are very impressed for the services and enjoyed the trip and also thinking of comming back to turkey again soon. With your permission we would like to recommend you to any one wanting to organise a tour with you.

If you would like to use this email as part of your marketing you are most welcome to do so.

Thank you again

Moreyfel

The Lunar Landscape of Cappadocia

It is hard today to think that the lunar landscape of Central Anatolia, indeed Cappadocia, was a major point of trade, defence, political and religious influence.

More so, while the Hittites, Persians, Romans, Byzantines, Seljuks and Ottomans, have all come and gone with the winds of time, the one enduring sight of the Cappadocia region remains: its lunar landscape.

The Unique Landscape of Cappadocia

The area is famous for its rock formations and fairy-like chimneys that tower over the landscape like latter day wind farms – silently, chillingly, still.

Over thousands of years, the elements has eroded layers of volcanic ash formed by the volcanoes of the local Erciyes, Hasan and Melendiz mountain ranges to form today’s landscape.

When a hard piece of basalt forms on top of a layer of ash, the surrounding ash eventually erodes away but the section under the basalt is protected, leaving behind a conical rock structure with a cap.

What clothes do you need to pack?

March-late May & October - late November

In this ‘shoulder season’ you may have pleasant mild days in Istanbul and the coastal areas, but cool evenings. In Gallipoli and Cappadocia days may be cool to cold, and you’ll definitely need a warm jacket for nights and early mornings. During the day you’ll need long trousers and maybe a sweater.

Late November to March

Winter in Turkey is very cold. Some parts of eastern Turkey and mountainous areas such as Mt Nemrut will be unreachable in this time due to heavy snow. It will be very cold in Istanbul and you will need coat, hat and sometimes gloves and scarf during the day. In January and February there is a high chance of snow, and every few years there is a major snow which shuts down the city.

At these times, no public transport runs and banks and schools are closed. Sites such as Gallipoli, Ephesus and Cappadocia still have daily tours, but you need to dress very warmly and be prepared for occasional delays in road travel. There is no chance of cruising or beach travel in this time.

Most Greek islands are more or less shut down to tourists. Ferries between Greek islands are irregular and unreliable. Restaurants and hotels are closed in the islands.

Mid-May-early October

These are the summer months. You can expect sunshine almost every day, with very occasional short periods of rain. In July and August it can be extremely hot, especially in Istanbul, the south and east of the country. Tourist sites such as Ephesus and Cappadocia become very crowded.

Istanbul’s night life is at its peak, and Istiklal Street in Istanbul sees crowds of tens of thousands of people, well into the early morning hours. June and all of September are the best times to visit Turkey. The heat is not too oppressive, and but the days are warm and sunny. For swimming and sailing, September is nicer as the sea is warmer.

Sanliurfa – Abraham, Beehive Houses, and Ancient Settlements

Sanliurfa is a large province in the Southeast of Turkey.  Not as well-known as its neighbouring counterpart of Gaziantep but I wanted to visit it for one reason. Also known as Urfa, it is steeped in tales and historical sites related to Abraham and his time spent in ancient Mesopotamia.

Known as father of the Israelites and called Ibrahim in Islam, he is regarded as a prophet and pioneer of the religion. God asked Abraham to sacrifice his son and when he saw his willingness to do so, instead placed a sheep at Abraham’s hands, hence the animal sacrifice made by practising Muslims every year.
