Hotel accommodation will be fully booked up and any latecomers that do find spare rooms will have to pay heavily to secure them.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Konya is bracing itself for one of the most important events of the year and that is the annual celebration of Rumi and the whirling dervishes\u2019 festival.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">For many, this is a journey to commemorate the death of a poet and his works that continue to penetrate everyday society.<\/p>\n<h2>Who was Rumi?<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Rumi was born\u00a0on the edge of the Persian Empire,\u00a0in the city of Balkh which is now part of Afghanistan. In 1273, he died in the <a title=\"Are there any religious events that will affect travel plans?\" href=\"http:\/\/www.turkeytravelcentre.com\/blog\/questions-answers-turkey\/are-there-any-religious-events-that-will-affect-travel-plans\/\">Turkish<\/a> city of Konya.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Despite his departure from this earth over 700 years ago, his poems and quotes are still widely read today by millions of people all over the globe.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Rumi Poems and Quotes<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The work of Rumi is extensive and often called words of wisdom by modern day artists and authors.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">His words spoke about every aspect of life but mainly focused on love and inner peace.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Famous quotes include<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>\u201cYour task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>\u201cWords are a pretext. It is the inner bond that draws one person to another, not words.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>\u201cCome, come, whoever you are. Wanderer, worshiper, lover of leaving. It doesn&#8217;t matter. Ours is not a caravan of despair. come, even if you have broken your vows a thousand times. Come, yet again , come , come.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">What is his significance to the west?<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Despite his origins in the east, Rumi is widely known in western countries. He was the bestselling poet in America for a number of years and his poems have been globally translated into many languages.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As a practicing Sufi, his beliefs lay in a branch of Islam yet his followers include Christians and Jews along with <a title=\"From Boy to Man \u2013 The Turkish Circumcision Ritual\" href=\"http:\/\/www.turkeytravelcentre.com\/blog\/turkish-circumcision-ritual-party-sunnet\/\">Muslims<\/a>. He did what many others have tried to do and failed miserably at. He connected people of different religions and it all began with his words.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Read any poem or quote, and there is no bias against cultures. There is no preference of one race against another. Muslims are not favored over Christians or Jews.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He found a way to communicate with the world without excluding one single person, hence his popularity in the west.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Whirling Dervish Festival<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The festival is ten days of activities that will lead up to the 17<sup>th<\/sup> of December, which was the day of Rumi\u2019s death. 2012 is the 738<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary and the 17<sup>th<\/sup> is often referred to as the wedding night.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Followers of Rumi are called <a title=\"The Whirling Dervishes of Turkey\" href=\"http:\/\/www.turkeytravelcentre.com\/blog\/whirling-dervishes-turkey\/\">whirling dervishes<\/a> because of their ceremonial dance. The dervishes will spin around and around in circles until they achieve inner peace. \u00a0It is a memorizing performance for both them and the people that watch.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">If you are unable to make it to Konya for the annual festival, the ceremony by the whirling dervishes is also held throughout the year.
